Is recycling a waste of time, money and energy?
Most of us feel guilty if we do not take the trouble to wash and sort all those reusable plastics, papers and tins. We do this to avoid throwing them in the bin which then ends up in the landfill sites around the... |

I don't think so. It won't waste time, energy, or money. Because It is really protecting the atmosphere from pollution so I think it is not waste of time and energy.

A number of sorting companies have already torn up their contracts with councils, and some collectors just won't touch recycling.
This is a private landfill in Melbourne run by BFI, the world's second-largest waste management company. But for all its expertise, technology and money, it's no longer collecting recyclable materials in Melbourne. It's just not economically viable. And the company won't discuss publicly its reasons for this decision, that's too politically sensitive. BFI does operate a collection and sorting service in Canberra, a city that enjoys one of the highest recycling rates in Australia. But the news there is no better than anywhere else. The company's losing a hundred and twenty thousand dollars a month on a seven million dollar investment. While many companies involved in kerbside recycling believe it's unsustainable at the moment, one says they're all wrong. Each year, Visy profitably turns a hundred thousand tonnes of household waste paper into cardboard boxes. It's invested enormous amounts of money into recycling and approaches it with missionary zeal. |
